Dr O'Cathail MB, BCh, BAO, FRCPI, FRCR, FFRRCSI graduated from University College Cork, NUI in 1977.  He undertook his internship at the South Charitable Infirmary, underwent general medicine training at  St. Finbarr's Hospital, Cork Regional Hospital and the Mercy Hospital, Cork.  Dr O'Cathail was awarded the MRCPI in 1980.
Dr O'Cathail underwent specialist training in Clinical Oncology and Radiotherapy at Cookridge Hospital, Leeds, followed by St. Luke's Hospital, Guildford, Surrey ultimately working as Senior Registrar, Thames Region, London, England. After completing training in Clinical Oncolgy & Radiotherapy at Westminster Hospital, London he was awarded FRCR in 1985.
Dr O'Cathail was appointed Consultant in Clinical Oncolgy & Radiotherapy, Cork Regional Hospital in 1987.
He was awarded FFRRCSI ad eundum 1990 and elected FRCPI 1991.

Special Interest: Since 1995, in conjunction with Consultant Ophthalmology colleagues at Cork University Hospital, has provided a national service for treatment of primary ocular malignant melanoma using radioactive Ruthenium eye plaque therapy, which is an eye & vision sparing alternative to surgical eye removal for these very rare eye tumours.
